All items for outdoor use are made from coppiced sweet chestnut and occasionally reclaimed oak. Coppicing is a very old form of woodland management, which produces tall, straight, clean timber. In this case an area of sweet chestnut is cut or 'coppiced' in the winter (about two acres) and the wood is used for materials in fencing, building and crafts. In the spring the stumps send out shoots, which grow densely and fast. These shoots/stems become the next crop and can be cut again after several years when they reach the required size. There is no need to replant the woodland after cutting as the trees do it all themselves. Continued cutting of coppice helps to maintain the woodland, its bio-diversity and the valuable timber resource which grows all over the south east.
